正月三が日に妻の実家＝婿入り先の本家に泊まりで年始挨拶に行った際、
寝る前が暇だったので、妻の部屋で見つけた京極夏彦著『姑獲鳥(うぶめ)の夏』を読みました。
昨年、映画化されたので知ってる人も多いかと。
私は京極夏彦は初めてで、なんとなくイメージ的に、妖怪を扱ったおどろおどろしい小説を書く人なのかなぁと思っていたのですが、この作品に限って言えば(他は読んでないので知りません)、およそ理屈っぽい哲学的な小説であると言えます。
これは一般に京極堂シリーズと呼ばれる、特定の主要人物を中心に起きるミステリーシリーズ物だそうで、基本的に主人公である、うつ病を克服したとされる少々精神的に弱めの関口巽(常に関と呼ばれる)と、古書店『京極堂』店主にして神主という二足の草鞋を履き、古今のあまねく知識・知恵を蔵して薀蓄を語り、理屈で相手をやり込める偏屈人間、通称・京極堂こと中善寺明彦の交友関係を中心に、ウブメという妖怪？伝承？を題材にした事件が発生します。
妻いわく、京極堂と私は似通った部分があるそうで、なるほど彼の薀蓄、語るところには共感を覚える部分、納得する部分、持論と共通する部分が多く、なんとなく好感が持てるのですが、おそらく普通の人から見たら、本当偏屈で変わり者にしか見えなさそうな人物。
もしかして、映画をDVDなどで観たいと思っている人のために多くを語りませんが、私はなかなか面白い筋書きだと思いました。
ただ、展開は途中でなんとなく想像がついてしまいましたが。
結構古い本で、他の著作物に比べて氏の作品は随分と分厚いので、なかなかあれですが、今後も続けて読んでみたい作品群です。
